The Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco at Our Lady of Good Counsel organize an event called Funtastic Friday every 2nd and 4th Friday at the Don Bosco Youth Center from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
This event is open to young students from Grade 2 to Grade 7 and there is no fee. Although registration is appreciated, it is not mandatory. Funtastic Friday is essentially a Salesian Oratory.
But what is an Oratory?
An Oratory is a place where young people can come to play, pray, learn more about their faith and grow in their relationship with God and one another. It is a home, school, church and playground, as St. John Bosco said. Don Bosco started his work for young people at his "Oratory of St. Francis de Sales" in 1841. This Oratory moved around to several places in Turin, Italy until 1846, when it finally settled in the city's Valdocco district, where it currently operates.
The Oratory is not only a place where people gather, but it is also an experience that has four parts.
- Firstly, it is a home that welcomes and gives a sense of belonging and safety.
- Secondly, it is a church that evangelizes and gives our faith meaning.
- Thirdly, it is a school that educates and enables critical thinking.
- Lastly, it is a playground where friends meet, play and celebrate individuality.
Every Salesian work is inspired by the Oratory.
